Canadian tennis sensation Bianca Andreescu roared into the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in the early hours of Tuesday in New York, beating American Taylor Townsend in a nervous three-setter, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in almost two hours.
She earned $500,000 for that victory.
The match didn't finish until well after midnight and featured Andreescu almost losing her cool. At one point, she drew a code-violation warning for tossing her racket, although she later claimed the racket slipped out of her hands. Some, such as former tour player and now TV analyst Brad Gilbert, have called her to win the tournament. The women's final is Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern.
Andreescu was born in Mississauga and resides in Thornhill, north of Toronto. She is of Romanian descent who has patterned her game after another Romanian, Simona Halep. Andreescu will move from No. 14 into the top 10 in the world next week.
The hard-hitting Andreescu meets Belgian Elise Mertens, seeded No. 25, on Wednesday. The draw has turned quite favorable for Andreescu. A victory would put her in the semifinals against either No. 13-seed Swiss star Belinda Bencic or Croatia's
